A
BRIEF HISTORY OF PORSCHE 917.021
This
Porsche 917K was owned and raced by Aernio Wihuri (AAW Racing)
of Finland.
Principal
driver was Gijs van Lennep of Finland.
Early
in 1970 the car was painted psychedelic blue and green.
At
LeMans, the drivers were David Piper and Gijs van Lennep.
The
car carried number 18 and was painted psychedelic yellow, orange
and red for LeMans.
Piper
and van Lennp were in 3rd place at the 4th
and 5th hours.
A
blown tire damaged the bodywork causing retirement from the race
in the 10th hour.
The
car finished 2nd in points for the 1970 interseries
Championship.
The
roof-mounted mirror was unique to this car.
The
car was retired at the end of 1970 and some parts were used to
complete a spyder chassis acquired for the 1971 season.
The
car was white when Don Marsh brought it to Charlie.
It was unknown that it was the race car until Charlie
stripped it down.
A
miniature of the 917 has been made and can be purchased on the
internet.
